How Do We Eat?

  • PDF

Islam gives us guidelines on how, when, and what to eat.

There are numerous traditions that warn of the consequences of excessive eating and inform us of the benefits of hunger and eating in small quantities. The Prophet has said that a man whose consumption of food is little has a healthy stomach and a pure heart, and a man whose food is plenty has a sickly stomach and a hard heart. Further warning us against excessive food, he has said it poisons the heart with hardness, slows the limbs in performing acts of obedience, and blocks the souls from hearing counsel. Imam Ali said that overeating is the greatest aid to acts of disobedience, and that when the stomach is filled with even permissible food, the heart becomes blind to goodness.

True Followers of Imam Mahdi

Ya Sahib az-Zaman!We have a firm belief that one day our Living Imam will reappear by Divine command, and waiting and preparing for his arrival is one of the main duties of a Shia Muslims today. We should therefore try to obtain the ability and merit of being his special companions when he reappears. One who is waiting and preparing himself for the reappearance of the Imam must have the characters and merits of the companions of Imam Mahdi, and should be able to sacrifice his life and wealth in his way. For this reason, Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq (peace be upon him) has said: "One who waits for our commands is like a person who sacrifices his own blood in the way of Allah." Yes, he who is really ready for the Imam becomes like a martyr in the way of Allah. Are we recognized among those who are expecting his return? Are we waiting for the Divine Promise of the Authority of Allah in the same manner as we wait for the return of our loved ones from a journey?

Ayatollah Makarem ShiraziIf there is bribery and usury in the management [of society], underselling, scams, and bad Hijab, preparations cannot be made with these contaminations. Awaiting means to fight against these contaminations. We must do what will bring about the seed of this revolution and righteous servants of God who are the inheritors of the earth

False Claimants and the True Mahdi

Mirza Ghulam Ahmed, a famous false claimant

Even a cursory examination of people throughout history who have claimed to be the Mahdi will reveal that the conditions prior to his return and the appropriate actions, knowledge, and behavior of the real Imam have not been met. However, many people have been deceived, and more will be deceived by false claimants in the future.

Goals Versus Sacrifices

  • PDF

The youth of Karbala certainly had goals, dreams, and aspirations of their own.

We need to stop and reevaluate our goals in this life. We need to make sure we include Islam in our plans for this life. We should not worry about temporary pleasures or interests. It should not matter how old we are. The warriors of Karbala included teenagers and even children. Whatever sacrifice we can make for this religion, we should for it. Sacrifice does not necessarily mean getting killed. Sacrificing time and money for the sake of God are also extremely important. Learning about the Ahlul Bayt (peace be upon them) and spreading their teachings is a great sacrifice in its own right. We all can contribute. It should not matter much if our goals get delayed or put aside. Our religion deserves these sacrifices from us. With that said, what are your goals in life?

Perfection: Enemy of Progress?

  • PDF

Holding us back from even startingThis idea is informally known as perfection being the enemy of the good. This is not to say that striving for perfection is not good. We should always strive for perfection in all spheres of our lives, and if we do not achieve it, we find out why we didn't and correct ourselves. The problem arises when we plan and plan and wait for the circumstances around us to be supposedly "perfect" before we take any action.
