OK everyone is getting far to crazy about th.is, first off, geez there are far worse things in the world, WHy not tackle the increase in alcoholism? Which harms more than just the drinker. And as for Hookah smokers, I'm not a smoker, but gosh I've been in a hookah bar with a few buds, Hookah smoke doesn't leave that nasty smell that cigarette's do, it's actually quiet pleasant, and cig smokers tend to be snobby people to me, as for hookah smokers it's more of a social thing not a "I have to get my nicotine" routine. I don't care about the healthy facts, the truth is everything is bad for you, everything in moderation people, Pepsi is bad for you in large ammount, those crazy Monster drinks, junk food, god, leave hookah alone and let people kill themselves the way they want to.

Asalaam Alaaykum wr wb

The water-filtration and extended hose does not filter out the nicotine, tar, cancer-causing chemicals and dangerous heavy metals. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hookah under the Health section for starters.

The rulings were posted by the author re: smoking.
According to his website, Ayatollah Nasir Makarem Shirazi states that smoking is absolutely prohibited in any situation. On the other hand, Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Sistani and Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei both have similar rulings on the issue: there is no problem in smoking per se. However, if one is already smoking or is about to start smoking, then it is prohibited for him/her to do that if there is a probability that serious harm will take place, and it becomes compulsory to quit. The only exception is if quitting will cause even greater harm, in which case it is not compulsory to quit. However, there is no problem in smoking rarely, i.e. to the extent that there would be no probability of harm in the future. (See Ayatollah Sistani's A Code of Practice for Muslims in the West, #353, and Ayatollah Khamenei's Practical Laws of Islam, #1390 and #1397.)
- otowi

This article fails to acknowledge the element of water filtration that occurs in hookah smoking, which is absent in other forms of smoking. I would suggest a more complete analysis before publishing an article on a subject that is fairly clear in the manuals of our jurisconsults. - abSin

I don't like it either, I think it is gross, and I grew up in a smoking household. I wish people would leave it aside altogether, even just occasionally. What good does it do to smoke? - otowi

It appalls me that so many people think smoking is glamourous or attractive. It is anything but. Smoking is bad for the lungs as well as smelly. I hope less people engage in this habit. - frequent reader
